Miller Time

Shopping with my sister is like shopping with TLC’s Stacy and Clinton. Your sister’s stamp of approval is a deciding factor, no questions asked. Sister knows your closet best seems to be catching on, as celebs pair with siblings in fashionable endeavours. Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen collaborated on The Row (their contemporary collection Elizabeth & James will be available at Holt Renfrew Spring 2008). Last month, sirens Penelope and Monica Cruz launched their collection of clothing and accessories at Spanish fashion-land Mango. And now, couturiers Sienna and Savannah Miller are the latest pairing with the creation of Twenty8Twelve by S. Miller (named after Sienna’s birthday). The design duo combined Sienna’s trendsetter tastes and Savannah’s design sense (a fashion school grad who worked with Alexander McQueen and Anya Hindmarch) and voilà, it’s Miller Time. The Style Spy snagged Saira Zia, Holt Renfrew’s Twenty8Twelve buyer for an insider look.

How would you describe the overall look and inspiration?
Their vision for the label and indeed the very essence of it, lies in time old tailoring techniques – sophisticated garments with a vintage feel, but a contemporary vibe and strong directional design. The first collection “An Anthology of Rebellion”, encapsulates perfectly their vision for the brand – refined garments with an androgynous feel, elements of eccentricity and a feeling of Dickensian London.

Favourite pieces carried in the Vancouver Holts?
My favourite piece of the collection is a red jean with zippers up the back of the entire leg. It’s such a great colour and the zipper up the back is so unique. I also love the grey cropped leather jacket with tails, because it is such an amazing colour for leather and gives it a vintage feel.

What is the price range?
The range sits just below the designer diffusion price point. Pieces from the twenty look collection start at $95 for a tank, $495 for a silk print blouse, $495 for a cropped tuxedo jacket, and $285 for a skinny pant trouser.

Thoroughly Soothed

By now, you are tucking your tootsies away in ‘to-die-for’ boots as we usher in chillier temps, but pinched and squished feet can make your pedi look….well, not so pretty (wince). To keep your pedi (and hard-working feet) primped for patent peep toes and sexy strappies, you may want to test drive some Burt’s Bees Thoroughly Therapeutic Honey & Bilberry Foot Crème and see what all of the buzz is about!

If you’ve had enough of tingly, peppermint-y foot lotions, this crème, exfoliates and deeply moisturizes with the help of bilberry extract and (this is where the bees come in)….honey! Since honey is a natural humectant it makes your feet feel soft and smooth and smelling good enough to eat! At 99% natural, and enriched with jojoba butter and soothing vitamin E, you can slather it on night after night before you hit the sack, toss on a pair of cotton socks and awaken to supple, healthy feet! No need for rough, dry feet and heels (icky!) despite your most foot-numbing, yet very stylish boots, thanks to some very busy bees!

But, if it’s not your tootsies that need the TLC (although that’s none of our beeswax), Burt’s got a product or remedy for just about anything from head to toe! Burt’s Bees is available at Capers and Choices Markets.

We are WeSC

Every now and then, there’s a label that really catches the attention of the ladies and fellas who love fashion and, even more so, love to wear it.

WeSC (which stands for “We are the Superlative Conspiracy and absolutely NOT pronounced “whesk”) is a Stockholm, Sweden-based brand, founded in late 1999 by a merry band of snowboarders and skateboarders (three of them of whom are pro) who wanted to rock forward-looking, street-wise clothing and accessories that fit their lifestyle and represented the sub-cultures that made up their lives: snowboarding, skateboarding, art, music, fashion, design and all that related — hence their philosophy of “life after skate”.

Since the Swedes love their knits (their country tends to be cooler than most), you can find a lot of them in WeSC past and current collections. The Swedish also like their color, hence the bright hues in their Spring 2008 collection, including orange-red-blue striped polos for the guys and bold plaid, woven dresses for the dolls. In between the comfy tees and candy-colored denim (we’re talking cherry, cloud blue and sunshine shades) are some stand out pieces, such as the 100% lamb nappa leather men’s “Roffe” jacket and the cotton herringbone hooded ladies’ coat with double front pockets and triple strap closure. The brand doesn’t stop there – perforated leather wallets, bikinis, board shorts, printed bags, limited edition collections and premium headphones — check out the Dj Pro Aoki pair, designed by the mega-turntablist Steve Aoki of Dim Mak Records — round out the WeSC roster.

The label has avid followers, both famous and not, who are dubbed “WeActivists”. These individuals live and die by the philosophy of WeSC, all of who love sub-cultures promoted by the brand and who are open to variations of them from around the world. Peter Stormare — best known as the dude from Prison Break and those hilarious Volkswagen commercials – actually faxed in his sketch for a tee he designed for WeSC. It made it on the shirt unedited. Other WeActivists of note are actor/pro skater Jason Lee, photographer Cobrasnake (from popular party website “Last Night’s Party”), artist Mercedes Heinwein and pro boarder Stefan Karlsson.

WeSC is really beginning to strike a style chord in the fashion set, especially on an international level of late. The label is currently and locally carried in Aritzia, Plenty, Eugene Choo and The Block on the west coast, as well as Simons in Montreal.

So say oui, oui to WeSC.

Rainbow Bright Tights

Grey is one of fall’s hottest colours; however with fall comes chilly, dark evenings, cloudy skies and our return to those drab buildings – otherwise known as school or work. Luckily, this fall you can keep colourful and cozy with bright tights to avoid blending into the background.

Gold and silver lamé or bright jewel tones will help brighten up any outfit. Add some bling to your outfit with these gold or silver lamé tights from H&M.

If that’s too flashy for you, try a pair of subtle shiny stirrup tights from American Apparel. The tights are available in six colours that run the gamut from subtly sexy black and neutrals to downright outrageous with its more adventurous colours.

Check out the jewel-toned tights, which are all really hot for fall. Pick up a pair at stores such as H&M, Urban Outfitters, American Apparel and Aldo Accessories. Barney purple or lovely fuchsia are top picks – but remember, when choosing bright legwear, be bold and make a statement. After all, you’ve got to play this trend up the right way.

Girl of the Week

This week’s Girl of the Week, CORA MAU gave us a sneak peak of the new Mavi Spring/Summer 2008 line (super hot, especially the coloured denim). What would you never wear: Yoga pants with heels or dress pants with running shoes, a big NO NO!

What can you never get enough of: Accessories, jackets and purses.
